Health and Safety Policy for Harlesden Carpet Cleaners

Harlesden Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing professional carpet and upholstery cleaning services while protecting the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, visitors and members of the public. We recognise our duty to manage risks arising from our work activities and to continually improve our health and safety performance.

Our Health and Safety Commitments

We will plan and deliver all cleaning work so that it is carried out safely and with minimal risk. Management accepts overall responsibility for health and safety and will ensure that adequate resources, training, supervision and equipment are provided so that work can be undertaken responsibly and in line with relevant regulations and industry guidance.

All employees and contractors working on behalf of Harlesden Carpet Cleaners are required to follow this policy, cooperate with our safety procedures and take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Methods

Before commencing cleaning work at any premises, our operatives assess potential hazards, including slip and trip risks, electrical safety, manual handling, chemical use, ventilation, access routes and the presence of children, pets or vulnerable persons. Where necessary, we implement control measures such as additional warning signs, barriers, cable management, improved ventilation or modified work methods.

For specialist or higher risk tasks, such as cleaning in confined spaces, working near stairways or handling large or heavy items, we use specific safe working procedures. These procedures are reviewed regularly and updated if materials, equipment or working environments change.

Chemical Safety and COSHH

We only use cleaning chemicals that are suitable for professional use and appropriately labelled. All products are stored, transported, diluted and applied strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions and our internal procedures. Where required, we maintain up to date data sheets and carry out assessments of substances that may present a risk if not controlled correctly.

Operatives are trained to minimise exposure to cleaning agents, to avoid unnecessary spraying, to prevent contact with skin and eyes, and to avoid inhalation of mists. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks or eye protection is provided and must be used whenever the task or risk assessment requires it. We take care to prevent chemical residues from affecting customers, staff or pets by rinsing, neutralising and ventilating areas as appropriate.

Use of Machinery and Electrical Equipment

Harlesden Carpet Cleaners maintains all cleaning machinery and electrical equipment in a safe condition. Equipment is inspected regularly and any faults are reported immediately, taken out of service and repaired or replaced as needed. We only use equipment that is appropriate for the task and for the type of flooring or fabric being cleaned.

Before connecting equipment to a power supply, operatives check for visible damage to cables, plugs and sockets. Extension leads are routed to avoid trip hazards and are not overloaded. Equipment is not used in wet conditions where this would present an electrical risk, and operatives do not attempt to bypass safety devices or guards provided by the manufacturer.

Manual Handling and Physical Safety

Our team is trained in correct manual handling techniques to reduce the risk of strain and injury when moving machines, hoses, tools and furniture. Wherever possible, equipment is transported using wheels or trolleys. Heavy or awkward items are lifted by two people or repositioned by sliding, rather than by lifting alone.

We take particular care when moving furniture or other items in customers premises to prevent damage to property and to avoid creating trip hazards. Walkways and emergency exits are kept clear at all times during our work.

Protection of Customers, Staff and the Public

Harlesden Carpet Cleaners plans cleaning work so that it causes the least possible disruption and risk to customers, staff and visitors. Warning signs are used to mark wet or recently cleaned areas. Where necessary, we restrict access to work areas until floors, carpets or upholstery are safe to walk on or use.

We take special precautions when working in homes or businesses where children, elderly persons, pets or individuals with allergies or respiratory conditions may be present. This may include additional ventilation, the use of low odour products, or agreeing suitable times for the work so that vulnerable persons are not present during cleaning.

Training, Supervision and Competence

All employees receive appropriate induction and ongoing training in health and safety, safe use of machinery, chemical handling, emergency procedures and customer care. Refresher training is provided when new equipment or products are introduced, or when existing procedures are updated.

Supervisors and managers are responsible for monitoring work practices and ensuring that safety rules are followed. Only competent and authorised personnel may operate specialist machines or carry out tasks requiring specific skills. Where contractors are used, they are expected to work to the same standards and follow our health and safety requirements.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

Any accidents, near misses, injuries or property damage occurring during our work must be reported to management as soon as possible. We investigate incidents to identify causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence. Records are kept to help us monitor trends and improve our practices.

Operatives are briefed on emergency procedures relevant to the premises in which they are working, including fire evacuation routes and assembly points. Basic first aid supplies are carried in vehicles or held on site where appropriate, and assistance is sought promptly if any injury or health concern arises.

Environmental and Occupational Health Considerations

We recognise the link between environmental protection and good health and safety practice. Harlesden Carpet Cleaners aims to use water and cleaning products efficiently, minimise waste and avoid unnecessary releases of chemicals to drains or the environment. We select products and methods that balance effective cleaning with reduced impact wherever this can be achieved without compromising safety or quality.

We also seek to reduce noise, odours and disturbance arising from our cleaning work so that both our employees and customers can enjoy a safe and comfortable environment.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

This health and safety policy is reviewed regularly, and at least annually, to ensure it remains effective, relevant and aligned with current legislation and best practice in the cleaning industry. We welcome feedback from employees and customers on any aspect of our safety performance and use this information to improve our systems and procedures.

By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, Harlesden Carpet Cleaners aims to provide a safe, reliable and professional cleaning service for every customer and a healthy, secure working environment for every member of our team.
